Bemister Reunion - Carbonear, NL from August 6 to 8, 2010
Attached is the second notice for our grand celebration in Carbonear, NL from August 6 to 8, 2010 - Our 2010 Reunion is less than a half year away! We hope you will forward this notice and its attachments to as many of your Bemister relatives as possible - ASAP!
We got great coverage on our last mailing and we think we will reach over 1000 families this time. Now we are still sending out the notice by Canada Post, but we will be glad to take people off the list and save money, if you will assure us you are reaching them by e-mail. Also if there is anyone you would like use to send the notice to by regular post, please let us know as soon as possible.
We are expecting a grand crowd in Carbonear, and we are getting reports of as many as 6 to 10 in a family group making arrangements to fly to St. John's, booking Bed and Breakfasts or hotels, and of course renting a vehicle. I would recommend that you make all these arrangements fairly quickly. It's going to be a great tourist year in part because of the Cupids 400 celebration, and we are competing with a very large event! However, if you start now you should still be able to find what you are looking for. There are lots of web sites suggested in the package that will be helpful to you on that score.
However, if you are having trouble finding what you are looking for, call me or one of our other committee members and we will try to help you. John and Mary Bemister could not have imagined what their progeny are up to this year - and John's 263 rd birthday will be the greatest birthday party Carbonear is likely to see this whole summer!
IF you can help in other ways we would be very pleased. Sending genealogical information and family stories would be really helpful, bringing artifacts for the Bemister traveling museum would be a wonderful addition, and just coming with your immediate family will be a thrill of a lifetime for all of you. If you can take part in our committee that would be fantastic too. You need to tell us on the registration form what your interests are so we can plan the event to maximize participation in activities people would most like.
When else do you think your granddaughter will see her 7th cousin? When else will you meet descendants of Maria Bemister Shepherd born 2000 years ago - the first Bemister born in the new world? This is a great opportunity that is not likely to be repeated any time soon, so you need to be there. And all of us on the organizing committee will be excited to meet you - right where it all started on 207 years ago when William Willis Bemister came to Newfoundland.
Please get your registrations in the mail and we'll hold your berth on the Bemister Brigantine, just down the gangway from Capt Willis Bemister himself. I can almost see Aunt Stella waving from the deck. The ghosts are everywhere, trust me! It's all going to be lots of fun, and you will be glad you came. Also we have to pay the bills, so your registration cheques will be a big help as will donations which are very welcome.
With our kindest regards
Cameron Hopkins - for the organizing committee

2010 Bemister Family Reunion
August 6th to 8th, 2010
Carbonear, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada
We are now within six months of our exciting 2010 Reunion to be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, in Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada from August 6 to 8, 2010. Carbonear became the ancestral home of the present day Bemisters after William and Edward left Corfe Mullen, Dorset in 1803 and 1812 respectively. For 200 years our Bemister family has been in the New World – but is now scattered far and wide across Canada and the United States leaving only a much smaller contingent in Carbonear and other parts of what is now the proud Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Our Bemister cousins who still live in Carbonear and environs are very enthusiastic about greeting their family members from up along, and our coast to coast organizing committee has been planning an exciting weekend including tours of historic venues and beauty spots, musical celebrations of our family heritage, and expressions of traditional Newfoundland and Labrador culture and hospitality.
We will have plenty of opportunities to honour our ancestors and greet our quite lively and energetic relatives from near and far, acquire a new appreciation of our history and genealogy, and generally enjoy a weekend of fun and fellowship you will never forget. You will marvel at the artifacts from the Bemister travelling museum – which we hope you will contribute to – containing pictures, bibles and prayer books, watches and jewellery, and lasting mementos of a family that has literally spread its wings like the eagles and flown to the far corners of North America, where our cousins have made a huge contribution to community and business and public life as they have in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Our ancestors have left their footprints for all to see, and present day generations are making their own history which they – and you – will want to share at our August reunion. Do fill out the family group record sheets so we have the most up to date information on your immediate family for our fantastic Bemister Family Tree. We will ensure that everybody at the reunion will know everybody else – including how they are related to one another.

Welcome To Cameron Hopkins
I had the opportunity to attend the first major event organized in Toronto in 1998 - which was totally by accident as I was in town on business and had decided to stay over for the weekend and visit with my sister and her family. We all ended up going to the reunion - and that followed with attending the 1999 reunion in Carbonear, Newfoundland and the trip to Corfe Mullen, in Dorset, UK in 2004.
Thanks to Cameron's efforts plans are well underway for 2010 in Carbonear once again (see below) -- but we need your ideas and input.
I was honoured to have Cameron recently join the Bemister Blog as contributing editor.
Welcome Aboard Cameron !!

Bemisters of Carbonear 2010 Family Reunion
Beginning with genealogical research in the 1990's, a few family members established new connections with relatives they didn't know. Once people had a chance to meet fellow descendants they began organizing reunions in Toronto, Newfoundland and Vancouver and quickly realized the value of holding larger events in ancestral home lands, as well as local events across the country. Local reunions and the major gatherings have become important events for family members with organizing committees working several years in advance. In 1999 an international reunion was held in Carbonear, Newfoundland and in 2004 the family returned to Corfe Mullen, England, for a reunion there. In all of these reunions local travel has been arranged so that sites of family significance can be visited.
The first member of the Bemister family arrived in Carbonear from Corfe Mullen Parish, Dorset. William Willis Bemister (1789-1863) was fourteen years old, and arrived as an apprentice clerk for a local export firm. His younger brother Edward joined him in 1812, and they eventually went into business on their own as they became young men.
The major family lines were established by the 18 children of these two brothers and their wives.

Bemisters of Carbonear 2010 Family Reunion Pre-Reunion Activity
Draft - open for suggestions
It is suggested that we provide opportunities for sight seeing with a Bemister flavour before and after the reunion - on a pay as you go basis. We could consider some sort of pre-registration so folks would have name tags and buttons for easy identification. Possibilities are given below. It is especially important for St. John’s committee members to give thought to the feasibility of these suggestions.
(These activities are for people who come as early as Wednesday Aug 4th and stay Wed and Thurs night in St; John’s; Woods family descendants in particular could be invited to stay at Everton House B & B on Kings Bridge Road and some activity can be based there) Group activity provides opportunity to give Bemister buttons and name tags for easy ID We wouldn’t do actual registration here.
1. Thursday morning; 9:00 am. Self guided walking tour of Old St. John’s (optional Bemister group walking tour) including Colonial Building (where Hon J B was an MHA), Cochrane St Church (where his family and Woods family attended; war memorial, site of old Methodist College where Bemisters attended and JB and HGBW were on the Board; Gower Street Church (where Rev. Charles Ladner and Rev. George Payne preached), The Rooms (archives, art gallery and public records of births, deaths etc are stored). Time permitting also the Basilica, the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist,. LUNCH at The Rooms (with a view!) OR Ches’s Fish and Chips (ie folks can either go with the group or go on their own or with the group, and connect at Rooms at 10:30 if they want or at Ches’s or Rooms Restaurant at 1:00pm
2. Thursday am, alternative tour guided and transportation needed, to General Protestant Cemetery followed by Wesley United Church where Rev. Joe Joyce set up NF’s first radio station, VOWR, South side home of Capt Edward and Emma (Bemister) White, LUNCH at George St Church Would have to meet at convenient central place(s). Could include Signal Hill if we were using a bus, followed by run down Duckworth, Water St, Harbour Drive with possible stop at war memorial
3. Thursday pm, short tour of Colonial Building and proceed to Everton House for afternoon tea at 4:00 in H. G. B. Woods drawing room - with ghosts of the past! Especially of interest to descendants of Hon John Bemister. An alternative with large crowd might be a garden party instead.
4. Thursday evening, tour of General Protestant Cemetery, meet at East Gate on Old Topsail Road at 8:00 pm followed by drinks at St John’s pub (eg Ship Inn)
5. Suggest supper at some St John's restaurant - pay your own way - say Velma’s on Water St for excellent fish or The Battery for the view !!! OR the time of this could be later to allow for the view of the City at night - then go up Signal Hill when really dark. The cemetery tour could be dropped or scheduled earlier in this case.
6. NO organized activity Friday am; People expected to make their way to Carbonear at latest for 7:00 pm and as early as noon

Building the family tree and telling the family story
It would be a great help if you could send us names and addresses, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of other family members who might be interested in attending any of these events. And it would be a real boost if you could pass on the information to others in your family and bring a group!
We would be delighted to get feedback on future activities - including a dinner in Vancouver in 2008 a picnic there as well in 2009 and a proposed major weekend reunion in Carbonear in 2010. We hope you will continue to support our Bemister family project that will certainly leave a proud legacy for our children.
Yours sincerely
Cameron Hopkins
For the Organizing Committee
OTHER EVENTS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA & NEWFOUNDLAND
Over the past 10 years since the first small Bemister event at Lorne and Martha Innes’s home in Mississauga, we have had no less than 8 Bemister events in Ontario, British Columbia, Newfoundland and England with a total participation of about 400. We now have within our extended family 7th cousins! We have an amazing diversity amongst the progeny of John and Mary Bemister of Corfe Mullen who have spread all across North America – and who seem to have had a wonderful time getting to know one another at our various reunions.
So we will be thrilled to have you and your immediate family take part in our grand project, help build our family tree and keep our family traditions alive!
TO REGISTER
To register or to express an interest in our Bemister Pot Luck Supper please return one of the enclosed forms with a cheque or money order payable to the Bemisters of Carbonear as soon as possible - and certainly not later than July 15. To register please send $20 per adult and $10 per youth along with your registration form. Children under 12 can attend for free. If you cannot attend, do sign up in the Bemisters of Carbonear anyway - and stay in touch! A family membership of $10 keeps you on the mailing list and we will send out further information as plans unfold
We welcome donations which will help to support these events and otherwise promote the objectives of the Bemisters of Carbonear - such as advancing our knowledge of family history and genealogy, producing regular newsletters, and setting up a Web site, repairing older headstones and organizing future family reunions. If you make a donation of $50 or more we will be glad to send you a beautiful Newfoundland pictorial calendar. For a donation of $100 or more we will provide you with a copy of Elizabeth Squire’s “They Lived by the Sea” which has lots and lots of information on our ancestors – especially Bemisters and related families in the Carbonear area.

ONTARIO PICNIC – SUNDAY, AUGUST 5, 2007
Our Bemister Family Picnic will be held at the Goodwood Community Centre in Goodwood, Ontario, on Sunday, August 5.
In the mid afternoon we will be organizing activities for children who would like to take part, providing information on family history and genealogy for those who are interested in our heritage, and giving lots of opportunity for Bemisters of all ages to renew friendships and meet new cousins - however far removed. We hope to have our Bemister travelling museum with its marvellous collection of family treasures – artifacts* as we say - and stories to go with them, lots of boards with family trees and pictures, and we will be bringing out a special edition of the Bemister Bulletin in honour of the occasion. Also we will have Newfoundland music and videos on hand.
Now the way we are keeping costs down is to run our event as a POT LUCK SUPPER – so you get to contribute a favourite dish to captivate your cousins. Now this can be a family traditional dish or not – we are sure it will all be delicious. What about Capt. Willis Bemister’s fish chowder? Or Aunt Stella’s Boston doughnuts? Or Obadiah Gilbert Joyce’s baked beans? Or Aunt Maria Shepherd’s spinach salad? Not to mention George Bartlett Bemister’s Railway stew, Granny Ladner’s Methodist butter tarts or Hon John Bemister’s cod au gratin? Well, you get the idea. We can have a wonderful meal with contributions from all branches of our family.
The cost will be a very modest $20 for each adult 18 and over, $10 for youths between 12 and 18 and 12 free. The fee includes a family membership in the Bemisters of Carbonear - which will keep you on the mailing list and ensure you get our newsletters, notification of future activities, and a wonderful buffet dinner. We will supply tea, coffee and soft drinks.
The nearest accommodations are B & B’s in Uxbridge area or motels in or near the other communities mentioned below. Goodwood is about a half hour drive NE of Toronto – and accessible from Highways 401, 404 or 407. The community is E of Markham, W of Uxbridge, NW of Oshawa and Whitby and easily found on MapQuest (try typing Goodwood for the area map or just zoom in from Toronto – Markham area). There are also motels to be found in Newmarket, Stouffville and other communities E of Toronto.
Do return the interest / registration form - with your cheque NOT LATER THAN July 15. We will get back to you with additional information closer to the event. You can also communicate with us by e-mail or telephone if you wish.
On Saturday, August 4, we are willing to co-ordinate some additional activities for folks from afar if there is sufficient interest. These activities might include a lunch downtown, some sight seeing with a Bemister flavour, and perhaps a ball game. But all this is outside the family picnic which stands on its own on Sunday, August 5. Local tourist information will be provided at the reunion as well as Toronto area Bemister grave locations and other Bemister sites that may be of interest.
This should be a great event for the whole family and we are sure you will enjoy meeting the dozens of other descendants of John and Mary Bemister of Corfe Mullen who are likely to attend. This picnic is a real winner!
Artifact – an object made by a human being, for example, a tool or ornament, especially one that has archaeological or cultural interest – viz. interest to the descendents of John and Mary Bemister, needless to say!
